The Middle East and North Africa is where humanity's oldest stories began, and where some of today's deepest unmet needs remain. EMERGE was built here, by people from here, for the long work of recovery the headlines never finish.

Across MENA, more than 60 million people are affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, and prolonged instability. Mental health professionals are scarce — fewer than one psychiatrist per 100,000 people in many countries. Cultural stigma, cost, distance, and insecurity keep care out of reach for those who need it most. Women, girls, children, persons with disabilities, and refugees carry the heaviest weight.
Lebanon hosts the highest per-capita refugee population in the world. Syria's displacement is now in its second decade. Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, and Gaza continue to generate emergency need.
WHO data shows the Eastern Mediterranean Region has some of the highest rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD globally — and the lowest treatment coverage.
Gender-based violence, child labor, family separation, early marriage, and exploitation rise sharply in displacement settings.
Frontline workers, teachers, community leaders, and faith communities are already responding. They need training, supervision, resources, and rest.
Care designed elsewhere does not always travel well. Language, culture, religion, family structure, gender norms, honor, shame, and history all shape how people experience trauma — and how they accept help. EMERGE was built to work within these realities, not around them.
Perspective
EMERGE was founded by practitioners from the region — people who chose to respond from within. The model reflects what we have seen, what we have lost, and what we have learned about how recovery actually happens in the homes and communities we know.
